Historical Maritime Events Along The New Jersey Coast

In 1609, Henry Hudson anchored in what is today’s Atlantic Highlands harbor, the first- recorded European to do so. The British fleet was at Sandy Hook throughout the Revolutionary War. James Fenimore Cooper sailed our waters which was said to inspire his 1830 novel, The Water Witch. Nineteenth century steamboats between Red Bank and New York transported people and produce. The Op-Sail fleet in 1976 stopped her to honor the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Gain an overview of these events in New Jersey’s nautical history.
