Brookdale Community College’s Fashion Design program is celebrating a remarkable milestone after two of its talented students, Lauren Louis and Catherine St. Germaine, achieved first and second place, respectively, at Newark Fashion Week’s Emerging Designers Youth Festival this past fall. Their success not only showcases their individual creativity and determination but also highlights the caliber of Brookdale’s Fashion Design and Merchandising program in fostering industry-ready talent.
Held in September, Newark Fashion Week provided an exhilarating platform for emerging designers to present their creations. Lauren and Catherine described the experience as intense yet rewarding, marked by sleepless nights spent perfecting their collections. “The energy was amazing,” Lauren shared. “We laughed, sang songs, and supported each other throughout the process, which made the experience even more special.”
Lauren, who won first place, impressed judges with her collection inspired by fantasy and streetwear, featuring elements reminiscent of Little Red Riding Hood but reimagined with preppy and distressed touches. “It was my first time putting together a full collection for a runway outside of Brookdale, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity,” she said.
Catherine’s second-place collection explored themes of anxiety and misogyny, blending artistic expression with sustainability. “I sourced fabrics from thrift stores and Fab Scrap in Brooklyn, ensuring my designs were as environmentally conscious as they were meaningful,” she explained. “The challenge pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me so much about fashion and myself.”
They were not alone in their efforts. Fellow Brookdale students Nicole Fancera and Sara Monacelli provided critical support during the event. “Nicole and Sara were there to assist with fittings and last-minute alterations,” Catherine noted. “Their positivity and encouragement were a huge part of why we were able to stay focused and deliver our best work.”
Brookdale’s Fashion Design and Merchandising program played an instrumental role in preparing Lauren and Catherine for this prestigious event. From hands-on classes to mentorship by dedicated professors, like Sheridan O’Hea, the program equips students with the skills and confidence needed to excel. “Professor O’Hea introduced us to key industry contacts and guided us through the intricacies of preparing a collection for a professional runway show,” Lauren noted.
The program also offers valuable resources, such as sewing office hours and connections to industry events, enabling students to develop their craft and gain real-world experience. Catherine, who serves as president of the Brookdale Fashion Club, emphasized the importance of collaboration and networking: “Being surrounded by passionate peers and supportive mentors made all the difference.”
Both Lauren and Catherine are already planning their next steps in the fashion industry. Lauren will showcase her designs at New York Fashion Week this February and will also serve as model captain at Newark Fashion Week. Catherine is focusing on building her portfolio and exploring opportunities at institutions like the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and LIM College.
Brookdale’s annual fashion show in May is also on their horizon, where they will once again demonstrate their growth as designers. “I’m excited to bring new ideas and see how we can continue to innovate,” Lauren said.
When asked what advice they would give to aspiring fashion students, Lauren and Catherine emphasized time management, sustainability, and staying true to one’s unique vision. “Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and think outside the box,” Catherine said. “Fashion has the power to shape the future, and it’s up to us to make it better for everyone.”
Lauren added, “Participating in events like these is a leap of faith, but it’s so worth it. Seeing your hard work come to life on the runway is an unforgettable experience.”
Lauren and Catherine’s achievements underscore the impact of Brookdale’s Fashion Design program and the boundless potential of its students. With their creativity, drive, and commitment to meaningful design, these emerging talents are poised to make a lasting mark on the fashion world.
