Brookdale Community College’s Center for the Visual Arts Gallery is excited to host an artist talk and closing reception for Nepantla: Maps for Uncharted Futures, a solo exhibition by Uruguayan-American artist Ana Vizcarra Rankin, MFA. This special event will take place on Thursday, December 12th, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Don’t miss the chance to hear Rankin discuss her unique approach to mapping and storytelling through art.

Rankin reimagines maps as personal and cultural narratives, using large-scale World Maps and Star Maps that depict the night sky at specific times and places. Her pieces go beyond geography, inviting viewers to see the world from fresh perspectives. This December 12th event provides a rare opportunity to learn directly from the artist and engage with her vision of maps as tools for exploring identity and place.

About Nepantla: Maps for Uncharted Futures

Nepantla, a Nahuatl term for “in-between state,” is inspired by Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands: La Frontera and symbolizes both the challenges and potential of exploring new perspectives. The exhibit includes Rankin’s self-portrait, Ofrenda a Yemaya, which will be displayed for the first time, and other deeply symbolic works. Rankin’s pieces have been featured in notable collections, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum and the Brandywine River Museum of Art.
