What is the TLC?
The Teaching and Learning Center promotes interdisciplinary interaction, pedagogical innovation, and the implementation of best practices for the design and delivery of instructional content. The Teaching and Learning Center administers the Learning Management Systems and oversees the operations for online courses.
What training is being provided?
The TLC will provide ongoing virtual workshops: you will access the training from your own location via a URL provided on the TLC events page. For more information, please check the TLC for Faculty website.
What training should I take?
If you are new to Canvas or want a refresher, attend a Quick start to Canvas workshop where you will learn about accessing your courses; organizing content; creating assignments; grading assignments; developing and moderating online discussion forums.
If you want to conduct a live session with your class at the regularly scheduled time from within a Canvas course, attend a Canvas Conferencing workshop where you will learn about sharing audio and video and sharing PowerPoint or PDF documents. Canvas conferences are recorded and available to you and your students for 14 days. Choose this option if you do not need to have all of your students on camera; students will communicate with you and each other via written chat.
If you want to conduct a live session with your class at the regularly scheduled time from outside of Canvas, and need all of the students to be on camera with the ability to fully interact with you and one another, attend a Zoom workshop, where you will learn how to schedule group collaborations, record and share recordings, and request control of a participant’s computer for easy technical or other support.
I can’t attend the training, what should I do?
We will record our training sessions and make them available on the TLC for Faculty website. Also visit this page for print and video documentation on Canvas, Canvas Conferences, Zoom and more.
How do I record a lecture and make it available to my students?
Print and video documentation are available on the TLC for Faculty website on how to use PowerPoint to record a lecture video. After recording the video, you can send the file to the TLC for closed-captioning and upload to your Canvas course.
If you are looking for something quick and temporary, Canvas Conferences allow you to record a lecture that is available to your students for 14 days.
How do I email my entire class?
Check documentation on the TLC for Faculty website. How to Email All Students on Your Class Roster:Video tutorial| Print tutorial
How do I conduct testing?
If the Testing Center is not open, you may opt to use Canvas for course testing. If you have tests in Word and would like the TLC to convert them (so you don’t have to re-type each question into Canvas), email staffic@brookdalecc.edu for assistance. If you want students to be proctored while taking the test, you may choose to use Respondus Monitor where students are in front of a web cam and the test session is recorded.
