Nursing Program Admission

Graduates from the Brookdale Community College Nursing Program earn an AAS degree in Nursing and are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN) to become a Registered Nurse (RN). We strongly advise students discuss pre-requisites and general education courses with an Academic Advisor/Counselor. Call 732-224-2555 to make an appointment with an Academic Advisor/Counselor.

Admission Packet to the Nursing Program

Application to the Brookdale Community College Nursing Program is a three-step process, open to all Brookdale Community College students. At any time after applying to Brookdale, students can submit the program-specific application for Nursing.

The Admission Application steps are:

  1. Read the entire Nursing Admission Packet and click on the link to the online application. Before filling out the online application you will have to activate your MyBrookdale NETID at www.brookdalecc.edu if you have not already done so.
  2. Successfully complete a program-specific admission test (completion of HS biology and HS chemistry, and any Brookdale Foundational Studies courses are pre-requisites for the admission test)
  3. Attend an Information Session (scheduled twice per year, usually in October and March). Placement on the wait list follows attendance at an Information Session.

The Nursing Program uses a rolling admission process. We review completed applications on an ongoing basis and admit qualified applicants until each class reaches capacity. When there are more applicants than seats for each class, the Health Science Institute Office maintains a wait list. The wait list is organized initially by the date of the Information Session attended and then by date of the initial application to the program.

After attending an Information Session, students will be placed on the wait list. No information is available until approximately 8 weeks following the Information Session, as it takes that long to accurately place students onto the wait list. After that, students may inquire about their place on the wait list by sending an email to HSIwaitlistinquiry@brookdalecc.edu. Brookdale staff will respond to emails within 3 weeks, providing a “projected” date of enrollment. This is an estimate and not a guarantee or promise of admission. New classes start each fall and spring semester.

Students must successfully complete a course as a Certified Nurse Aid (CNA), Certified Home Health Aid (CHHA), Patient Care Assistant (PCA), or Patient Care Technician (PCT) prior to starting the first NURS class. Training must include in-person clinical skills validation, appropriate to the course, to meet the requirement. CNA requires clinical experience in a residential care facility or hospital, CHHA requires in-person skills validation or clinical in a residential care facility and PCT/PCA requires clinical experience in a residential care facility or hospital. Licensure is not required to meet the admission criteria. Any other certification requires approval by the Director of Nursing.

Acceptance into the Nursing Program is conditional based on successful completion of the pre-requisite courses ENGL 121, PSYC 106, BIOL 111 (grade of C or above) and HESC 107 (grade of C or above). Students who have not completed these courses by the designated date will not be able to take NURS classes. Students must meet all other requirements of conditional acceptance.
