New Pathways To Teaching

Brookdale Community College is collaborating with participating New Jersey Community Colleges and New Jersey City University (NJCU) to offer New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey (NPTNJ), an alternate route to teacher certification.

The program provides an opportunity for people to become teachers who have a BS, BA, or higher degree and who did not complete a traditional teacher preparation program. The 200 hour program starts in early summer and January.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Bachelor or higher degree
  • 2.75 minimum GPA in highest degree (No exceptions)
  • Passing praxis II score
  • Certificate of Eligibility (CE)

Introduction To Teaching 24-hour Pre-Service Program

New!  Anyone applying for a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) is required to complete the Introduction To Teaching 24-hour Pre-service Program. The New Pathways Program is a Department of Education approved provider of the Introduction To Teaching 24-hour Pre-Service Program. 

 Course content will include:

  • An Overview of the Teaching Profession
  • Classroom Management
  • Assessment Tools
  • Lesson Plans
  • Learning Strategies
  • Job Search Strategies for Teachers
  • Diversity in the Classroom
  • The Implementation of Technology
  • Classroom Observations

This is a non-credit course with 20 hours of class work and a 4-hour classroom observation requirement. Upon successful completion, students will receive a certificate, as required by the NJ Department of Education, which documents their program completion. The certificate must be included in their CE application packet.

Information Sessions

After reading the NPTNJ Program Overview, if you still have questions, you may attend an Information Session. (Program requirements and the application process will be discussed). Registration and payment of a $10 fee must be done in advance by calling 732-224-2315.
