Inside Track November 9, 2009

An Important Reminder from OIT

In order to improve the security of data stored on our email and file servers, we are going to be implementing a change in our password policy.

Effective November 16, 2009, the password that you use to access your Brookdale email and computer will expire.  At your first login after expiration, the system will require you to change your password. The password you choose must be a minimum of eight characters, and must be a password that you haven’t used in the past. Henceforth, you will be required to change your password  every 180 days.

We ask that you choose passwords that are difficult for another person or computer to guess, but familiar enough that you won’t be tempted to write them down. We are encouraging, but not currently mandating, the following complexity requirements:

The password you choose should not contain your account name or parts of your full name that exceed two consecutive characters.

Passwords should contain characters from three of the following four categories:
English uppercase characters (A through Z)
English lowercase characters (a through z)
Digits (0 through 9)
Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)

Two resources that you may find helpful, courtesy of Microsoft:
A guide to selecting strong passwords that are easy to remember: http://www.microsoft.com/protect/fraud/passwords/create.aspx
A web-based utility to check the strength of passwords that you are considering:  http://www.microsoft.com/protect/fraud/passwords/checker.aspx

We cannot stress enough the importance of protecting your account with a good password.  Remember that this password protects not only your own files and documents, but also potentially confidential information stored on shared departmental drives and in emails that others have sent to you.

Thank you for your cooperation.
